University of Adelaide advertises engineering academic positions exclusively for women

August 22, 2018

The Conservative Party says that the University of Adelaide's new discriminatory advertisements for academic postings for women only are yet another example of the unchecked political correctness occurring on university campuses.

ABC Adelaide reports that the university has used a special exemption under the South Australian Equal Opportunity Act allows schemes to benefit a "particular disadvantaged group", to advertise only for female candidates for the positions in the field of engineering, computing and mathematics.

The South Australian Equal Opportunity Act allows discrimination complaints against exemptions to be made to the Equal Opportunity Commission.

The Conservative Party's South Australian Senate candidate Rikki Lambert said while positions should go to the best candidate, the Conservatives would not be putting in a complaint, "The Conservative party is reticent to submit complaints to a body when we fundamentally disagree with its existence."

The University of Adelaide's science faculty will also soon be advertising female-only jobs. About 40 per cent of the institution's academic staff are female.

The associate professor, senior lecturer and lecturer positions are in the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, which is made up of 85 per cent male academic staff.

Mr Lambert said political correctness and recruitment targeting was not achieving the results our young people need.  "The clearest example of this is the poor results were getting in STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths]," Mr Lambert said, noting that girls and young women were already showing an increased interesting in STEM and "governments and universities don't need to be running ahead of the community with these sorts of targets".
