Withdraw Australia from the hypocritical Human Rights Council

The United States of America announced has withdrawn from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

The UNHRC has consistently criticised Australia's successful border protection policies and handling of indigenous affairs.

Yet UN Watch points out the hypocrisy of current UNHRC members, including those standing accused of:

  • Saudi Arabia, death sentences for apostasy and adultery, and corporal punishment including flogging and amputation;
  • Venezuela, widespread arbitrary imprisonment - including of opposition leaders;
  • China, which denies free speech, freedom of religion or association, conducts extra-judicial killings;
  • Cuba, violation of freedoms of speech, assembly and the press.

Previously, Australian Conservatives called upon the Australian government to ensure that our nation calls out the hypocrisy of the UNHRC  when our Governor-General - His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Ret’d) -addressed the UNHRC. He did not. In fact, he celebrated bodies like the highly controversial Australian Human Rights Commission - which the Conservative Party wants to abolish.

Add your name to our campaign calling upon the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Australian Government to withdraw from the UNHRC.

The UN General Assembly appointed Australia to become a member of the UNHRC on 16 October 2017.

Australia's bid to join the UNHRC was a 'multi-million' dollar campaign, according to Foreign Brief.

Silence about human rights abuses should not be the prices to sit at the table.
