The Turnbull Government has drawn criticism for declaring today that it was cancelling the sitting of the House of Representatives next week, whereas the Senate will sit as scheduled.
The government declared it would postpone sitting awaiting a private members' bill passing the Senate to legislate the redefinition of marriage. Commentators noted that the government did not have the numbers for that sitting week until the New England by-election on 2 December, at which dual-citizenship tied Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce is widely expected to be returned.
Senator Cory Bernardi weighed in on Twitter, saying:
Better if @TurnbullMalcolm listened to me and prorogued parliament months ago rather than to panic and cancel next week sitting. I suspect govt is drowning not waving and no life guard in sight. #auspol @AuConservatives #ABetterWay— Cory Bernardi (@corybernardi) November 20, 2017
