ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie has written to Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi, denying the National Broadcaster was in breach of any of its guidelines when the word c*** was used to describe the party’s candidate for last month's Batman by-election, Kevin Bailey on the ABC TV show Tonightly with Tom Ballard.
Ms Guthrie wrote:
“ABC Audience and Consumer Affairs has finalised an investigation in response to complaints, including those raised directly by you. I attach the report, which sets out the review of the material against the relevant sections of the ABC’s editorial policies and the appropriate classification standards. You can be assured that all complaints were carefully considered, and no breaches were found.”
The attached report also denied that ABC guidelines were breached when another ABC TV show, Wake Up To Yourself repeatedly used the phrase “white people are c***s”.
Senator Bernardi said, "The report uses the words “context” and “satire” to excuse the bad language but has totally missed the point that very use of the “C” word itself goes against common standards of decency expected of a taxpayer-funded broadcaster."
