The true value of rural and regional newspapers

These days when people think media, they think about the internet and TV.

Yet across the nation, country newspapers provide an invaluable source of news and information to their local communities - something the Conservative Party holds in high regard.

In South Australia, a number of independent regional newspapers are standing strong as question marks hang over the future of their Fairfax-owned competitors after Fairfax merged with the Nine network.

South Australian Conservative Party senate candidate Rikki Lambert has told ABC Radio Adelaide's Jules Schiller the importance of local newspapers in country areas can't be overstated. He called in to a segment with the editor of The Bunyip newspaper at Gawler, in Adelaide's outer northern suburbs, which broke a story about a salary cap breach in the local Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association.
