The technology is proven: Bernardi

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says a nuclear power plant on the Eyre Peninsula would provide South Australia with cheap electricity, at the same time supporting a desalination plant which would create 5,800 square kilometres of irrigated land, according to new research.

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says a nuclear power plant on the Eyre Peninsula would provide South Australia with cheap electricity, at the same time supporting a desalination plant which would create 5,800 square kilometres of irrigated land, according to new research.

Scientists, from America's Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have prepared a white paper on South Australia's involvement with the nuclear fuel cycle and Senator Bernardi has released it today for community discussion.

It recommends the construction of a nuclear power plant, cooled by sea water generating up to 1500 megawatts of electricity for the South Australian power grid.

Excess electricity from the plant would be used to power a desalination plant, which in turn, could be used to develop farming of high-value crops on semi-arid, currently under-utilised land in the Eyre Peninsula.

Senator Bernardi has already introduced a bill into the federal Parliament to repeal the national ban on nuclear power plants in Australia.

Senator Bernardi has told Stacey Lee on Sky News, the white paper also backs the nuclear fuel cycle Royal Commission’s recommendation that SA establish an international storage facility for nuclear waste.
