Senior government figures have spent the week trying to peel back the number of Coalition MPs prepared to cross the floor and vote against the Turnbull government's controversial National Energy Guarantee.
The Conservative Party's biggest problem with the NEG is that it is inextricably linked to emissions targets contained in the UN Paris Climate Accord.
The NEG imposes two obligations on energy retailers:
An obligation to supply sufficient quantities of reliable power to the market along with an obligation to reduce emissions to 26% of 2005 levels between 2020 and 2030.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has told Sydney radio station 2GB the NEG is selling Australia out to an unaccountable, unelected United Nations.
