Stick to 'Roads Rates and Rubbish', Conservatives MLC tells Melbourne council

October 03, 2017

Hot on the heels of Australia Day date controversies, a Melbourne council has now weighed in on the refugee debate - drawing criticism from Australian Conservatives MLC Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins.

The Victorian Conservatives MLC took to Facebook and Twitter her criticism of a Greens-led attempt to introduce the refugee debate at the local government level, saying the Yarra Council in Melbourne should stick to 'roads, rates and rubbish'.

The City of Yarra council had recently also drawn fire for distancing itself from 26 January as the date to observe Australia's national holiday - another Greens-led initiative.

Australian Conservatives members are currently being surveyed on the extent to which local government - namely, councils - are being politicised and losing focus from core council business.
