Some Muslim women are being criticised for what a Sydney Muslim preacher says is "the sexualisation of the burqa" by women who wear coloured burqas as a fashion statement.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi, who recently introduced a bill to the senate to ban the wearing of head coverings on Commonwealth land, in the ACT and NT and at Centrelink offices, says he doesn't agree with the attack.
Umm Jamaal ud-Din, a convert from western Sydney, railed against colourful headscarves designed to make someone look pretty saying, 'When you look at the new hijab fashion industry that's come out, we can see that the concept of hijab is becoming very distorted. We're finding that the hijab is actually becoming sexualised now.'
Senator Bernardi has told Paul Murray Live on Sky News, bucking the burqa-wearing trend isn't a bad thing.
