Senate votes down motion targeting slurs on Greens party website

November 14, 2017

Senator Bernardi has tabled a motion that takes aim at the Greens party website, which makes outrageous and unsubstantiated claims against President Donald Trump.

The motion read as follows:

Mr President

I give notice that on the next day of sitting, I shall move - That the Senate:

(1) notes that the Australian Greens website claims that the President of the United States of America "was elected on a platform of racism, division and fear" and that "his time in office so far could easily be confused for that of a fascist dictator";

(2) discourage Honourable senators from making emotive statements of this nature about Australia's allies as they do not assist bilateral relations; and

(3) expresses its respect for the free, fair and democratic presidential election decision of the American people made on 8 November 2016.

The motion was ultimately voted down.
