Australian Conservatives have secured in-principle support from a senate majority that the pathway to budget surplus is not increased taxes, but reduction of government waste and spending.
Senator Bernardi moved the following motion, contrasting the ALP's Whitlam era acceleration of government spending, the similar levels under the Turnbull Coalition government - and the correct direction in which spending was heading under the Howard Coalition government:
45 years after Whitlam started the #auspol spending binge, the @AuSenate has just agreed that the pathway to #budget2018 surplus lies in reducing spending and waste - not by increasing taxes. #abetterway, the @auconservative way - let's see how they vote on future measures pic.twitter.com/aUwqhpJE81— Aust Conservatives (@AuConservatives) December 6, 2017
Later that day Senator Bernardi encouraged crossbench senators to live up to the spirit of that motion by supporting measures that would reduce the burden on taxpayers.
