Australian Conservatives MLC Robert Brokenshire has stated that the ever increasing gap between Victims of Crime Fund revenue and payments calls into question whether the fund is simply propping up the budget.
According to an article in The Advertiser, only five victims of crime have received compensation payments greater than $50,000 since the maximum payment was increased to $100,000 in 2015. Moreover Victims of Crime Fund projections predict almost $300 million in revenue by 2018.
"Based on the statistics, it concerns me the Government are not serious about looking after victims of crimes but are instead using it to offset their Budget balance sheet," says Mr Brokenshire, highlighting the failures of the fund evident in almost 1,500 of 2,074 payments made since July 2016 totalling less than $10,000 dollars - all despite the increasingly bloated fund revenue.
