MP eligibility must be resolved before legislating resumes: Bernardi

November 09, 2017

Senator Cory Bernardi has repeated his call to prorogue (i.e. suspend) parliament until the eligibility of MPs is resolved.

Appearing on Sky News earlier today, Cory Bernardi said 'until we get to the bottom of it, it's in the national interest to stop legislating.'

Senator Bernardi's repeated prorogue call came the same morning as The Australian reported that Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie was under a dual citizenship ground. Later today that The Australian also broke the news that SA Nick Xenophon Team MP in the seat of Mayo, Rebecca Sharkie, might be at risk of losing her seat on dual citizenship grounds.

If Ms Sharkie or any other House of Representatives MP is deemed ineligible, a by-election will be required - as is presently underway in the NSW federal seat of New England, the electorate of Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce.
