Push for bloc with Burston

June 07, 2018

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi and Senator David Leyonhjelm say they are hopeful that sacked One Nation senator Brian Burston will join the “loose alliance” they have formed with fellow former One Nation senator Fraser Anning.

The Australian newspaper reports having sat as an independent since defecting from One Nation last year, Senator Anning yesterday announced he was joining Katter’s Australian Party, revealing he intended to defy his new boss Bob Katter by supporting the Turnbull government’s company tax cuts.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson last week demanded Senator Burston resign from parliament after the pair fell out spectacularly following Senator Burston’s decision to defy Senator Hanson and vote for the tax cuts.

Senator Bernardi has told 2GB’s Chris Smith the alliance will not always vote the same way, but the bloc would have the power to make or break government legislation in the Senate.
