Crossbench parties push to restore electoral windfalls

February 14, 2019

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says some crossbench Senators are pressuring the Morrison government to allow public funding for politicians over and above their election expenses.

Senator Bernardi has told Peta Credlin on Sky News, this could deliver a windfall to parties and cost taxpayers countless millions of dollars.

The reported spending and funding returns from the 2016 Federal Election - the last time such rules were in force before they were changed - the 'Derryn Hinch Justice Party' had a $489,000 windfall, the 'Nick Xenophon Team' $539,000 and 'Pauline Hanson's One Nation' over $1.4 million.
