Parry presidency doubts reveal Bernardi was right

October 31, 2017

The Senate President's revelation this afternoon that he might be a dual British citizen by descent has further vindicated Senator Cory Bernardi's calls in response to the citizenship crisis.

Tasmanian Senator Parry has this afternoon issued a statement indicating that he is checking with the UK Home Office whether he is a British citizen via his father. If so, he has indicated he will stand down as Senate president.

Tweeting this afternoon in response to the crisis, Senator Cory Bernardi has said the Prime Minister must be wishing he listened to his call to prorogue (suspend) parliament until the citizenship crisis abated.

Senator Bernardi also repeated his call for a full citizenship audit of all senators and members.

You can read more about the crisis in The Australian newspaper online - which broke the story - and in the Financial Review and ABC online.

UPDATE 1/11/17:  Calls for a citizenship audit of all Australian MPs in headlines around the country today echo Senator Bernardi's initial suggestion in favour of suspending parliament, recognising him as a leading voice on the matter.
