No Time For Political Point Scoring: Irrigators Need To Be Put First

July 25, 2017

Australian Conservatives MLC Robert Brokenshire has called on the Federal Water Minister to establish an urgent Ministerial Inquiry into the alleged misappropriation of billions of litres of water from the Murray River.

8733048-3x2-700x467.jpgAlarmed by the allegations Mr. Brokenshire has called for proper action: "I have asked
Agriculture and Water Minister Barnaby Joyce to call for an urgent Ministerial Inquiry and to make the results public as irrigators, not political personalities, should be given priority in this
situation"

Urging explicitly in favour of a Ministerial Inquiry, Mr. Brokenshire maintains that a Parliamentary Inquiry would fall short and accomplish nothing but "political point scoring."

"South Australian irrigators have led the way when it comes to water efficiency, much of which was paid for by individual irrigators. What they need now is for the government to lead and get to the bottom of this mess." adds Brokenshire, continuing to highlight the potential criminal offence that water theft entails and remarking that such behaviour "...works against all the good will South Australia put into the national water agreement and it stops vital water coming through the whole system."
