A man who was turned away from a New South Wales mental health facility because there weren’t enough beds, two days later stabbed his five year old son to death.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says the reasons for this kind of tragedy need to be urgently investigated so it can't happen again.
The man arrived at the Hornsby Community Health Centre with his mother, who asked for him to be voluntarily admitted to the centre.
Staff informed his mother that as the centre does not admit patients she needed to take him to a hospital emergency department where he would be assessed and admitted if appropriate.
It is understood staff followed proper protocol by advising the family to take the man to an emergency department and he did not present with a dangerous mental illness that required him to be admitted to hospital against his will.
Senator Bernardi has told Triple M’s Luke Bona we need to get to the root causes of mental health problems.
