Memo to rebel coal Nats: Conservatives in the Senate can help

March 07, 2019

The political paralysis on using Queensland coal in Queensland can only be broken by electing Australian Conservatives in the Senate.

This is the message Conservative Party Senate candidate Lyle Shelton (pictured) will talk to the voters of Emerald, Mackay and Townsville as he visits Central and North Queensland for public meetings over the next week.

His comments follow news today that six rebel LNP politicians have gone public with their frustration over the Morrison Government’s lack of action on building a coal-fired power station in north Queensland to help drive down electricity costs.

“Sadly the LNP is so captured by the green climate gods that its members have to resort to defying their Prime Minister just weeks before an election to get attention," Mr Shelton said.

“A lack of courage and will means we cannot use our own abundant coal resources to drive down electricity prices but, hypocritically, governments allow coal to be exported in record quantities because they collect billions in royalty tax. This is not about climate change, it is about hurting Australia for no good reason," he continued.

“I predict that the Government will ignore the calls of the six rebels to underwrite a new coal-fired power station. The Morrison Government has just committed $2 billion to Snowy 2.0, a project who’s viability rests on the closure of more coal-fired power stations," he said.

“Sadly the Government’s attachment to the UN’s Paris ideology means we are trapped in a cycle of subsidising expensive and unreliable renewables while watching our electricity bills soar and jobs go off-shore. It’s madness,” Mr Shelton said Conservatives holding the balance of power in the Senate could exert enormous influence on whoever forms government to re-think Australia’s energy policy so power prices could come down.
