The Murray Pioneer newspaper in the South Australia's Riverland region reports that the mayoral delegation led by Conservatives MLC Rob Brokenshire has proposed a compromise to the state government on speed limits.
The government had targeted eight roads in country SA, including at least one in the Riverland region.
Mr Brokenshire took a delegation of mayors to the Road Safety Minister and told the Pioneer the minister took a 'hard-headed' approach to the issue. "What we need is a government that will come to the party," Mr Brokenshire told the Pioneer, "For example there are a number of roads that the majors agree have sections where the speed must be dropped for safety until the Government invests and fixes them. This accounts for very small sections of roads, yet the Government wants to drop the limit across the whole expanse of road, which simply makes no sense."
