It might have been about love, but it’s game, set and match for free speech

January 25, 2019

The failure of senior Liberal Julie Bishop to back free speech and repudiate fake news is deeply concerning to mainstream Australians who thought same-sex marriage was just about the love of two people.

Conservative Party spokesman and Queensland Senate candidate Lyle Shelton said if senior Liberals won’t stand up for freedom of speech and freedom of religion, who will?

“It is difficult to understand why Julie Bishop would support an American fashion identity’s call for one of the world’s greatest tennis players, Margaret Court, to have her name removed from the Margaret Court Arena at the Melbourne Tennis Centre," Mr Shelton said.

“Margaret Court’s views on marriage are the same as five million Australians who voted no in the plebiscite and consistent with yes voters who were led to believe the change to the marriage law would have no impact on anyone else’s freedom of thought and belief," he continued.

“Margaret Court’s views are also consistent with what the Liberal and Labor parties believed until five minutes ago and now Julie Bishop is backing the removal of her name from the Margaret Court arena," he said.

“The demonisation and purging from public life of anyone who does not hold to the ideologically correct views of elites is chilling,” Mr Shelton said Ms Bishop’s support of the fake news that religious schools expel kids because they are gay should worry anyone considering voting Liberal at the next election.

“Voters who value freedom of speech and freedom of religion should take out third-party insurance by voting for Australian Conservatives in the Senate at the May election,” Mr Shelton said Ms Bishop’s support for the attack on Margaret Court’s freedom of speech was further evidence of the identity crisis besetting the Liberal party.
