Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi has explained the defection of former Australian Conservatives' MLC Dennis Hood to the Liberal Party.
Senator Bernardi told ABC Radio Adelaide he didn't see it coming, but looking back over a series of isolated conversations, circumstances and discussions over recent months, he could see it leading to a particular point - which resulted in Mr Hood's defection press conference yesterday afternoon.
"The issues (Mr Hood) raised in the press conference was that he was opening up a great deal more work for himself by joining the major party and that surprised me," Senator Bernardi said.
"Because I know how being a part of the cocoon in a major party is really a place to get away from hard work if that's what you want to do. I know that the path that I've chosen to start a political organisation based on principles and values is the toughest row that people can hoe and it's not for the faint-of-heart."
