Homeschoolers targeted by government: Shelton

February 14, 2019

The Left like to pick on homeschoolers because they are not sufficiently controlled by government, according to the Conservative Party's Queensland Senate candidate Lyle Shelton.

Queensland homeschool numbers have tripled in the last five years, which Lyle says coincides with the introduction of the insidious “Safe Schools” gender fluidity programs in schools.

An article in the Brisbane Courier Mail claims homeschooled children need more unstructured outdoor exercise and they don't rely on organised sport. The claims is based on new research contested by homeschool parents.

When registering to homeschool, Queensland parents are required to document the child’s educational program which may or may not include physical education.

The new international research, published in the latest Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology, found that simply enrolling a child in a sporting team or activity was not enough exercise for 100 home schooled children and children needed more incidental exercise.

The study was carried out by the Faculty of Kinesiology at Rice University in Texas.

But Queensland mums who homeschool their kids disagree with the research, insisting that homeschooled kids move more than those in formal education.

“No one wants to be cooped up in the house all day. We often go outdoors to run around as well as the kids being involved in dancing, gym, swimming and running,” Sherry McGahan from Dalby, who schools her 12, 13 and 15 year olds told The Courier-Mail.

“We can’t wait until school starts and the parks and pools and outdoor areas are empty so that we can enjoy them,” she said.

Logan’s Tracy Newton says her seven year old is a proficient tennis player and is able to practice more often than if he attended school.
