Hard to trust government on freedom of information: Brokenshire

October 15, 2017

Australian Conservatives MLC Rob Brokenshire has criticised a South Australian government plan to publish information sought by Freedom of Information applicants at the same time the information is given to the applicant.

The Adelaide Advertiser newspaper reports that the policy has come under fire from frequent Freedom of Information applicant, Australian Conservatives MP Rob Brokenshire, who says it will be used as a further tool by the State Government to manipulate information flow.

“There should be a seven day waiting period before they are published to the general public so that proper scrutiny of the documents can be undertaken,” Mr Brokenshire said. “Sometimes I have received a Freedom of Information request back on Monday but the Government has leaked selected information on the Friday before to combat any exclusivity.

“It is hard to trust a government that has been in power for 15 years to become open and transparent on the eve of an election.”

Mr Brokenshire said he would support the introduction of a seven-day waiting period in conjunction with other improvements. He called on the Liberals to back his proposal.
“The Opposition should be the new model citizen on this,” he said.
