Halal certifications are being slapped on products across Australia by unaccredited organisations that have funded overseas terrorist groups, says Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi.
Senator Bernardi will today introduce a bill to end almost three years of inaction to regulate domestic halal certifiers.
He said some groups have been reported having links and giving funding to terrorist groups, as well as bribes.
A Senate inquiry in 2015 was unable to identify who the certifiers were, and recommended that the government consider the monitoring and compliance of halal certification of meat for export, and that organisations register their operations under certification trademarks — but not one had been adopted prompting Senator Bernardi’s call to action in the sector.
Earlier this year Senator Bernardi told Flow FM why the bill is needed.
