Greens leader Richard Di Natale has delivered a speech to the Canberra Press Club claiming that establishing a government-owned electricity retailer would cut power bills. He's urging the government to intervene in the free market, and ban the newly created power provider from buying electricity generated from fossil fuels, such as coal and gas.
The Conservative Party says government intervention in the free market through green energy subsidies is the main reason power prices are so high.
In shades of the Greens' plan to establish a "people's bank", Senator Di Natale unveiled details of the party's policy to re-create a publicly owned energy retailer, to be known as Power Australia.
Both the Greens and Labor are supportive of government intervention in the free market in the form of subsidies for renewable energy.
Senator Di Natale told the Press Club, "Barring a catastrophe, we are going to see Bill Shorten as the next prime minister of this country. We think that's a good thing,” he said.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says the left-wing's insistence on subsidised renewable energy is all wrapped up with our membership of the Paris Climate Accord, which cannot deliver cheaper power in Australia.
