GetUp! foreign donation questioned

January 15, 2019

The foreign donations controversy continues, with an overseas donation to the left-wing activist group GetUp! highlighted by Conservative Party South Australian Senate candidate Rikki Lambert.

The Australian reports, a $95,000 foreign donation to GetUp just weeks before a 1 January restriction on foreign donations to political actors - meaning the left-wing activist network narrowly avoided the tough new laws.

The Australian revealed that GetUp received the donation from the European Climate Foundation last month, with the Morrison government saying the news is "deeply concerning".

Special Minister of State Alex Hawke said, "It is essential that foreign donors do not influence our elections and that organisations in Australia comply with the law".

Mr Lambert has told ABC Radio, political donation disclosures should occur in real time so that Australians can see which organisations are trying to influence their vote. The Australian Conservatives, he says, have lead the charge in self-disclosure.
