Criminals and dodgy operators have ramped up attacks on disabled people using the $22 billion National Disability Insurance Scheme with recent complaints involving ‘‘tens of thousands of dollars’’ being siphoned from participant support packages.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi warned the government about burgeoning NDIS rorts as early as last year.
The Australian reports, in one case, the entire “core” support funding for a young woman in South Australia was taken by a lawn-mowing company based in Western Australia.
A separate incident involved a man with acquired brain injury who had $9000 removed from his support package, which was the third incident this year involving the family.
In total, the family has had more than $12,000 taken for no reason.
The National Disability Insurance Agency, which runs the scheme, set up a dedicated fraud taskforce earlier this year. The taskforce includes the Department of Human Services and the Australian Federal Police, which has carriage whenever commonwealth money has been stolen or misused.
The agency does not release details of complaints, and it is understood these cases are just a small fraction of serious matters currently under investigation.
Senator Bernardi has told Paul Murray Live on Sky News the NDIS is a massive drain on the federal budget.
