"Folau...more strength to his arm" : Bernardi

April 20, 2018

Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi has congratulated rugby star Israel Folau who said gay people were going to hell unless they repent their sins, in an Instagram post he wrote two weeks ago.

While some have branded his comments as homophobic, others say he is free to express his religious views.

Treasurer Scott Morrison backed Folau on Wednesday, saying the embattled footballer had shown strength of character.

"It clearly means a lot to Izzy and good for him for standing up for his faith," Mr Morrison said.

On Paul Murray Live on Sky News, Senator Bernardi has denied he is showing inconsistency when it comes to freedom speech by supporting Israel Folau’s right to speak his mind yet condemning a government worker who was sacked for attacking her employer on social media.
