Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has hit out at media outlets which run opinion pieces disguised as journalism - as was the case yesterday in the Sydney Morning Herald, whose front page led with a story which was clearly wild speculation, presented as fact.
Without any credible attribution, the story claimed the Morrison government was seriously considering the option of holding two separate federal elections next year to give it, "more time to restore community support and defeat Labor".
Despite repeated and firm rejections of the idea from both the Prime Minister's Office and the Special Minister of State, Alex Hawke, the newspaper persisted and ran the speculative story on its front page.
