Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi, says the idea of partnering or even merging the Northern Territory with South Australia has some merit and should be explored in the future.
The ABC reports, former NT Country Liberal Party minister John Elferink floated the idea of merging SA and NT to create a new enlarged state as a way to alleviate the Territory's current budgetary woes.
The Conservatives Party's South Australian Senate candidate Rikki Lambert recently welcomed former Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Tim Fischer's support for the exploring the proposal, which he says has enormous economic potential for both jurisdictions.
Senator Bernardi has told ABC Radio's Alex Barwick, it's in keeping with history for the two states to work more closely together.
