Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for a new national day recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people while defending his support for Australia Day to remain on 26 January.
But Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says the proposal is just a thought bubble as we have far too many days recognising indigenous culture already.
The Prime Minister made the suggestion on Tuesday after criticising Byron shire council, which is the third local government to be stripped of its right to hold citizenship ceremonies after voting not to hold them on 26 January.
Senator Bernardi says we need to abandon the symbolic nonsense and make a few tough calls because no amount of cultural indulgence will redress the shocking health outcomes among so many regional and remote communities.
Symbolism won’t provide the jobs that are vital to self-esteem and community growth.
He's told the Triple M network's Luke Bona, in defence of the Prime Minister, he was well-intentioned in his suggestion.
