Former Army Reserve Brigadier and now Liberal Senator Linda Reynolds is calling for mixed-gender teams in major sporting codes including the AFL.
Australian Conservatives leader South Australian Senator Cory Bernardi has responded saying, “When you sacrifice common sense and rational thought at the altar of political correctness you end up with ideas like this.”
Today’s Sydney Morning Herald reports Marnee McKay, a lecturer in musculoskeletal physiotherapy at the University of Sydney, doubts mixed gender teams would suit contact sports.
She said her researched showed that from 12 years of age, "males and females are fundamentally physically different in terms of speed, power and coordination and balance".
She said tests demonstrated males were stronger than women but females were better at tasks that required fine motor skills. Dr McKay said mixed gender teams could work for sports like lawn bowls.
"But...league? No. I cannot see male and female professional athletes competing across all sports."
Senator Reynolds attacked Senator Bernardi in the Senate earlier this month after the Australian Conservatives leader suggested it could be against the national interest to have women serving in combat roles.
