Senator Cory Bernardi has publicly committed to investigating the allegations of slaughtering dugongs and sea turtles - including juveniles.
In response to an advocate posting a picture of a sea turtle cooked on an open campfire, Senator Bernardi said on Twitter earlier this week that "This is just plain wrong. Time for reason to prevail. Let me look into it."
Opponents of the hunting and slaughter of sea turtles and dugongs have previously pointed out the inhumane methods of capture, and the catching of breeding / calving mothers and juveniles in northern Queensland.
Senator Bernardi has indicated to the Cairns Post (subscriber article link) and Townsville Bulletin newspapers that he may join fellow crossbencher Derryn Hinch in advocating a moratorium on the traditional hunting of protected species.
Some of the following images have been shared with Australian Conservatives highlighting some of the practices used by traditional hunters.
