Don't change policy: Bernardi

November 02, 2018

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has urged the Morrison government not to change policy when it comes to the Nauru refugees.

The success of Operation Sovereign Borders is something the Conservative Party celebrates annually, including a Senate Motion moved by Senator Bernardi in September to mark the 5-year anniversary.

The Guardian reports, the government has started moving refugees from Nauru to mainland Australia and Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton (pictured) says the government is not able to pursue the resettlement of asylum seekers in New Zealand because intelligence suggests people smugglers would resume operations.

Dutton confirmed there had been an acceleration of removals from Nauru in recent weeks, but he claimed that was designed to save money, not to respond to humanitarian concerns about the health of children.

He said people being removed from Nauru would not return to offshore detention but insisted they would not be settled in Australia either.

On the Triple M radio network, Senator Bernardi has urged the government to hold firm on our very successful border protection policy, because any sign of weakness and the people smugglers will just start up business again.
