Senator Sam Dastyari has followed through at last on his December 11 promise to quit the Senate, leaving a number of questions still to be answered.
A week before Mr Dastyari announced his resignation, the Coalition government had released its plans for national security upgrades and legislation in light of concerns about Chinese interference in Australian politics.
Senator Bernardi had responded then, and repeated his calls for Senator Dastyari's resignation, with this statement about foreign influence in Australian politics.
Australian Conservatives have continually called for a Royal Commission into Chinese influence in Australian politics.
Meanwhile, Senator Dastyari will be replaced by former NSW ALP premier and unsuccessful candidate in the December 2017 Bennelong by-election, Kristina Keneally.
