Senator Cory Bernardi has moved in the senate to remove the ability for permanent residents to sponsor visas, saying that only Australian citizens should be legal sponsors of those seeking to enter Australia.
Moving an amendment to the Migration Amendment (Family Violence and other measures) Bill, Senator Bernardi flagged that the system should only be available to those who have secured Australian citizenship.
Some observers have expressed surprise to learn that you do not have to be a citizen to sponsor a family member or worker coming into the country.
Debate on the measures has been adjourned to 2018 as numerous senators move amendments to the bill.
Senator Bernardi's move is in keeping with our policy positions regarding citizenship and permanent residency in our immigration policy.
