The Liberals might have won the seat but they have done so on Australian Conservatives preferences.
The ALP candidate Kristina Keneally conceded defeat last night as early counting indicated The Liberals’ John Alexander had retained the seat. On a two party preferred basis the Liberals were winning by over 4%, an amount less than Australian Conservatives’ primary vote of close to 5%. Conservatives voters were encouraged to direct preferences to the Liberals ahead of Labor.
Australian Conservatives founder Cory Bernardi thanked his volunteers and candidate Joram Richa for their efforts in this Tweet:
The more seats the Coalition wins on Australian Conservatives preferences, the greater respect the Liberals and Nationals will have for conservative values and policy.
Bennelong was the first seat ever contested by Australians Conservatives at any electoral level.
