Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi is delighted that the Coalition government has at last acted on a demand he has been making for years, the establishment of a public Transparency Portal for all federal government expenditure.
The Australian government’s pilot Transparency Portal website was launched this week and currently hosts annual reports of 14 departments and agencies as well as some corporate plans and portfolio budget statements.
Although the portal is “for demonstration purposes only” at the moment, all federal agencies are expected to upload their information to the website by a mid-October 2019 deadline.
The website promotes transparency, accountability and fairness for Australian taxpayers by publishing the annual budgets and audited expenditure of all Commonwealth Government bodies.
It will allow the public to make instant comparisons between government bodies using tables and graphs that collate the applicable data.
With Australian taxpayers bearing one of the developed world’s highest tax burden, Senator Bernardi has congratulated the Morrison government for putting this timely and important measure into place as it also sets an example for all state and territory governments to follow.
Senator Bernardi called for the Transparency Portal in February 2017, the month he founded the Australian Conservatives.
