Community safety takes its toll on thin blue line

November 04, 2017

Figures provided to Australian Conservatives MLC Robert Brokenshire, a former police minister, show that in the first five months of 2017, police officers sought help from an intervention and support service 150 times.

Speaking with Saturday's Adelaide Advertiser newspaper, Mr Brokenshire - a former a Liberal Party police minister from 1998 to 2002, who regularly uses the Freedom of Information Act to obtain data on police stress - said authorities had a duty to protect those who protect and serve.

"My concern is that the complexities of policing and the types of incidents they have to deal with will only see the stress levels increase, especially as officers face the challenges of balancing work and family life," Mr Brokenshire said.
