Children born addicted to drugs will be removed from their families unless they enter immediate rehabilitation under a plan by the Australian Conservatives.
Australian Conservatives MLC Dennis Hood has told The Border Watch newspaper he will introduce a Bill to see babies taken from addicted mothers who refuse to seek help when parliament resumes in April.g of both mother and baby.”
The move follows figures showing at least 55 reports were made in South Australian hospitals about babies suffering the effects of drug withdrawal because of their mother’s addiction in 2014/15.
The bill will also require mothers to undergo regular drug testing.
“If a drug addict causes their newborn child to be drug dependent at birth and suffering withdrawal and that person refuses to enter immediate rehabilitation with regular testing, the child must be removed for its own safety,” Mr Hood said.
“I will also be insisting that once the parent has gone through treatment they undergo regular, random drug testing for a period of two years and have regular visits from the department to check on the well being of both mother and baby.”
