Conservatives oppose Vic Labor volunteer firefighting plans

August 21, 2017

Australian Conservatives (Victoria) Member of Legislative Council, Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins, has today declared her opposition to the Andrews Labor government's plans (at the behest of the metropolitan firefighers' union) to merge the Country Fire Association and metropolitan firefighting services.

“The continued suspicion that the UFU (United Firefighters’ Union) played a role in drafting this bill was not diminished through this process,” Dr Carling-Jenkins said, “Furthermore, this legislation has an impact on 1.6 per cent of the Victorian Budget — it is simply too big for a ‘trust me’ attitude around implementation. The under-prepared budgets, and no adequate cost analysis to accompany the bill were flaws I cannot overlook, given the magnitude of the costings involved. A change of this magnitude should have been given all due diligence.”
