Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has come to the defence of Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight who suspended his Twitter account overnight because of a torrent of abuse towards his family and friends over his cartoon of Serena Williams’ US Open tantrum.
The Herald Sun reports, Knight, one of Australia’s finest cartoonists, said while positive comments were outweighing negative, he chose to do it to stop family being abused.
Knight has dismissed the global Twitter storm over his depiction of a tantrum-throwing Williams during the final of the US Open saying his portrayal was never about race or gender — rather the sporting superstar’s bad behaviour.
Knight’s take on Williams’ blow up (above) showed the 23 Grand Slam winner spitting the dummy and stomping on her tennis racquet as the chair umpire told US Open champion Naomi Osaka in the background: “Can you just let her win.”
Senator Bernardi has told Melbourne radio station 3AW's Neil Mitchell he will be moving the above motion in the Senate later today in defence of free speech.
Adelaide radio station FIVEaa's Jeremy Cordeaux weighed into the debate making a novel suggestion on his programme:
