Treasurer Josh Frydenberg is being targeted by a new campaign to drive him from Parliament by the Greens, who are running barrister Julian Burnside QC as their candidate for the Victorian seat of Kooyong at the May election.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi's low opinion of the Greens is well known and Julian Burnside standing as a Greens' candidate speaks volumes about him.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports, Mr Burnside announced his campaign yesterday in a move that throws open the contest for the prize Liberal electorate, escalating the threat to Mr Frydenberg in a seat the Morrison government cannot afford to lose.
Mr Burnside acted pro bono for asylum seekers attempting to get to Australia on the Tampa before the 2001 federal election.
He tweeted this week that he expected Prime Minister Scott Morrison to send a "whisper" to the Royal Australian Navy to let some asylum seeker boats through before the election to "terrify the nation".
