Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has written to federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor, asking him to support his bill to remove the moratorium on nuclear energy and lift the blanket ban on even consideration of a nuclear energy option.
With 40% of the world’s uranium resources residing in Australia, Senator Bernardi says the government would be “mad” to not pursue the power option.
Senator Bernardi has told Sydney radio station 2GB, “Twenty years ago the parliament endorsed the Greens complete ban on even having the conversation about nuclear energy. If we lift that, then if nuclear stacks up economically and environmentally, if we can find a place for it and get all the safeguard and approval processes in place, at least it's an option (we can talk about).”
