The excuse given by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith, that the electoral commission doesn’t have time to enforce new citizenship regulations for the five federal by-elections to be held on 23 June suggests that the federal government is stalling, according to Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi.
Last year Senator Bernardi said federal parliament should have been prorogued until this electoral mess was sorted out. The Turnbull government decided to ignore him with the resulting multi-million dollar cost to taxpayers for the upcoming by-elections.
The South Australian Senator told Paul Murray Live on Sky News that he can’t believe that the current hold-up is because the candidates don’t know the rules. He's certain there’s another reason the electoral brakes are being applied.
