Former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop claims Australia has become an international laughing stock and says it's the, "coup capital of the world," in an explosive 60 Minutes interview that left some of her colleagues fuming.
Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi says he would have expected more from the Western Australian backbencher and former Liberal deputy leader.
"I've had many calls from my counterpart foreign ministers who are very politely asking why I am no longer the foreign minister," she said.
Ms Bishop was invited to stay on as Foreign Minister in Scott Morrison's cabinet but turned it down to sit on the back bench instead. She received only 11 votes in the recent leadership spill, and had served as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party since John Howard lost office in 2007 - seeing leaders Nelson, Turnbull, Abbott and Turnbull elevated above her.
Senator Bernardi has told Paul Murray Live on Sky News, Bishop's outburst is not a good look.
