Bernardi wants royal commission into Chinese communist influence and espionage

September 21, 2018

Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has called on the Prime Minister to mount a royal commission into Chinese communist influence and espionage in Australia.

This week in the senate, Senator Bernardi made a formal request of the Coalition government to call such a royal commission as he is also concerned about the ownership by Chinese companies of sensitive Australian assets and the actions of some Chinese students in Adelaide.

The royal commission could be similar to the 1954 inquiry into Soviet espionage in Australia.

Government leader in the senate, Mathias Cormann immediately rejected the call.

Senator Bernardi has told Triple M's Luke Bona, Prime Minister Scott Morrison calling a royal commission into aged care was long overdue and the government genuinely needed to call it.
