Bernardi tells ABC 7:30 he won't support marriage redefinition

November 16, 2017

Australian Conservatives founder and leader Cory Bernardi told the ABC 7:30 television program last night he would not vote in favour of the bill to redefine marriage.

ABC 7:30 were there in the senator's suite in Canberra when the ABS announced the results of the marriage law postal survey. 61.6% of Australians voted Yes to the question "Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?"

A private members bill by WA Liberal senator Dean Smith will proceed through the Senate today, after a procedural motion moved by Labor, the Greens, Nick Xenophon Team and Liberals Linda Reynolds (WA) and Jane Hume (Vic) set aside senate business to accelerate redefining marriage.

"I won't support the bill but nonetheless we didn't have the numbers, and numbers are everything," Senator Bernardi said.
