Conservative Party leader Cory Bernardi has welcomed Prime Minister Scott Morrison's announcement that he has, at last, agreed to consider Conservative Party policy and overturn the ban on building nuclear reactors in Australia - but he disagrees with the PM's assertion that the economic case for them doesn't stack up.
The former chair of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and current chair of NBN Co, Ziggy Switkowski, has agreed that it is sensible to overturn the Green's two-decade nuclear moratorium to clear the regulatory pathway for considering the use of the next generation of small nuclear reactors.
Senator Bernardi has told 2GB's Luke Grant he has been working with M.I.T. on a soon-to-be-released report on the benefits of nuclear power reactors for Australia, which these days are totally safe.
